Book Clubs
Cleary's Bookstore hosts six book clubs: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense; Science Fiction; Historical Fiction; Horror; Fantasy; and our newest club, Critical Reading Required.
The six book clubs rotate, so each club meets once every six weeks, on Thursdays at 7pm. The current picks and upcoming schedule is below. Here are some important things to know if you plan to come to book club:
- Who: Book clubs are open to all who would like to attend, no need to RSVP. You are not required to purchase the book from us, we want all who want to join to be able to. So read the book on your preferred format (physical, audio, or ereader) and get ready to discuss.
- What: We select one book per club and announce the next book both the night of the book club meeting and the next day on social media and our website.
- Where: In-person at Cleary's Bookstore.
- When: Rotating schedule that meets Thursdays at 7pm.
- Why: Because we love yappin' about books with you.
Clubs, Current Picks & Meeting Schedule
MYSTERY, THRILLER & SUSPENSE
This year we will be reading quite a few sub-genres in this category, some book club favorites and some brand new to the rotation. On our list are southern cozies, nordic noir thrillers, serial killer police procedurals, domestic thrillers, cast-of-characters who-done-its, dark academia, gothic & paranormal, and much more.
SCIENCE FICTION
This year we will be tucking in to the best this genre has to offer. On our list are books in the subgenres: afrofuturism, space westerns, supervillains, time travel, alternate history, apocalyptic, and more.
HISTORICAL FICTION
One of our favorite genres, this year in historical fiction is going to be the best yet. We will be selecting a mix of books you might have missed that built the genre, must reads, and tales for the ages. Some periods and places that we will be visiting are: 1970s Argentina, turn-of-the-century Paris, nazi-occupied Germany, Cold War Russia, Colonial America, Ancient Greece, and more.
HORROR
This year we will be reading quite a few sub-genres in this category, some book club favorites and some brand new to the rotation. On our list are found footage, Lovecraftian & cosmic, slasher, folk horror, home invasion, cult classics and much more.
CRITICAL READING REQUIRED
Our newest book club is a mix of contemporary literary fiction and contemporary nonfiction and is a deeper dive into each book than our other book clubs.
Critical Reading is defined as: a way of reading that involves actively analyzing and interpreting a text in a more complex way that involves questioning the text and your own understanding of it, which is what we intend to do.
This year we are going to tuck into such subject matters as nature & climate change, literary canon reinterpretations, body positivity movement, transgender identities, cults and the language of fanaticism, influencers & internet culture, intersectional feminism, deconstruction, and more!
FANTASY
This year we will be tucking in to a bouquet of all this fantastic genre has to offer. On our list are books in the subgenres: fairy tale retellings, epics, arthurian fantasy, paranormal romance, magical realism, contemporary romantasy, low & high fantasy and more!
